Laguna Woods, California is a small town in Orange County, California. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Laguna Hills ridge southeast of Disneyland and east of Anaheim. The date that Laguna Woods was first settled is unknown but it is believed to have been prior to 1845 when Rancho San Antonio de la Calle was granted to Juan Crespí by Governor José Figueroa. In 1847, following Mexican independence from Spain, families from Mission Viejo arrived in what is now Laguna Woods. In 1850, Don Carlos Ferrer purchased Rancho San Antonio de la Calle and began developing the area into a resort town which he called "La Isla". In 1862-1863 Myron H. Wright built a cabin in what is now the heart of Laguna Woods. He became one of its earliest residents and served as its postmaster from 1863 to 1865. After taking over ownership of the inn from his father-in-law John Ayer in 1868 (the same year that Ayer donated land for an agricultural college), Wright continued to operate La Isla as well as build other buildings such as a hotel and chapel. By 1886 La Isla had become known as "Laguna Park" after its location on an artificial island within Lake Elsinore off Highway 14 near present day Thousand Oaks Boulevard. Laguna Woods is a small town located in Riverside County, California. It was founded in 1876 by two brothers, George and John Laguna. The Laguna Woods Post Office was established in 1876. In 1908, the name of the town changed to Laguna Hills after the family's home land became part of Laguna Niguel National Forest. In 1971, the post office was closed and most of the land within laguna woods were annexed into neighboring communities such as Corona Heights and Rubicon Valley. According to the 2010 census, there are just over 2,000 residents living within laguna woods borders; this number is expected to grow with new development along Interstate 10 and State Route 159.
