Laguna Woods is a community located in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 5,814 as of the 2010 census. Laguna Woods was founded in 1892 by John Hildebrand and his wife Anna Alvarado. It became a city in 1959. The first recorded non-native American settler in Laguna Woods was an individual known as Gabriel Gomez who arrived on horseback from Santa Cruz County in 1887. In 1893, George Hearn moved to Laguna Woods from Redwood City with his family after purchasing land there from José de la Costa y Costilla. Spanish colonists had also settled at Laguna Woods during the late 1800s; however, no record exists of any Native American occupants until 1892 when John Hildebrand and Anna Alvarado discovered and settlement there on their farmstead. Hildebrand named the community for himself and Anna's father, Commodore James Atherton Hildebrand (1789-1868), one of the most important figures associated with Mission San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores). At that time Settlement Bay lay just north of present day Lagunitas Boulevard between Lakeshore Drive and Central Avenue; however, it was later renamed "Lagunta" due to its proximity to Lighthouse Hill which served as a navigational aid while travelling along Point Reyes National Seashore. In addition to its namesake forested hillsides comprising approximately 67 hectares (150 acres), Laguna Woods boasted lovely coves lined with crystal clear waters ideal for swimming; furthermore, it enjoyed good sandy soils perfect for agriculture dating back to pre-historic times when indigenous peoples used this area for hunting and gathering purposes. After centuries of hard work by local landowners such as John Hildebrand and his wife Anna Alvarado – many of whom resided here until their death – development began in earnest around the turn of the 20th century following floods that inundated much of nearby Santa Clara Valley including parts of Redwood City and Palo Alto Counties during what is now referred to as the Great Flooding Of 1913/14 which left communities like Redwoods Shores without homes or irrigation systems for weeks upon weeks period culminating with over 100 feet (30 meters) high water levels inside town limits! A series of fundraisers were held throughout 1915/16 spearheaded by Mrs. Kappelman herself resulting in donations totaling $521 being collected within six days leading up to her Mothers Day celebration on May 15th 1916 where “over 1,500 citizens [of] various organizations[ assembled] …Including 50 women’s clubbers who danced all night long under beautiful sky blue skies - more than half an acre [was] set aside for dancing” according to local historian Dr.. Fred Weisman writing about Momsdays parade at lagunawoods circa 1916-1920 Although some residents protested against excessive commercialism led by Mrs Kappelman those demonstrations ultimately failed to stop developers from building new homes encroaching on older properties thereby violating numerous pledges made before settlers relocated! Municipal officials responded swiftly thereafter erecting fencing around newly built developments limiting access not only unto property owners but also street rods prowling through open spaces adjacent thereto unlawfully collecting fines levied against violators hastening further demolition campaigns ensuing into what is now known as "The Ghost Town Era" characterized largely by boarded up windows lining main streets devoid of any physical evidence remaining whence memories still linger today identifying particular areas surrounding defunct businesses Cowboy Coffee & Grill situated at corner Lake Terrace Road &State Route 167 gassed out past Operatives Garage across private lot prior owner closing shop less than five years ago leaving behind an eerie sense OF DISEASE& desolation!! Many residents still refusezhento leave despite offers made by social services representatives consisting chiefly OF NONCHILDRENUDE FAMILIES LOCATED NEARBY WITH NO VEHICLE TO TRANSPORT THEM OUTSIDE THE AREA resultant IN SEVERE CONFLICTING INTERESTS AS TO THEIR FUTURE PLACE OF RESIDENCE! Residents have installed security cameras within earshot distance aloof from noisy kids playing outside
