The first Europeans to visit Laguna Woods were Spanish missionaries in 1823. They named it Rancho Cucamonga after their rancho (village) of that name in Santa Barbara County. The original village of Laguna Woods burned down in 1865 but was rebuilt with new homes and a church near present-day US 1010 S. In 1912, Mayor John Fenton consecrated a cemetery for the dead of Monterey County which included some of lagunawood's earliest settlers including Jens Jakobsen from Denmark who arrived in 1846 aboard HMS "Pionier." In 1922, when Anaheim became an independent city, its first mayor George Waring dedicated a parkway called Main Street Boulevard through downtown Anaheim which runs parallel to US 1010 S., now Flower Street south of I-5E Exit 191A at Grapevine Road/SR 1507 N., forming what is today known as Riverside Park Wading River Freeway between US 1010 S./SR 1507 N., then east along SR 1507 N./Wading River Freeway north past Springwater Drive east into Orange County before turning southeast on CR 2232/US 192 (now State Route 15), thence following State Route 192 northeast until it joins Interstate 5E just west of Cloverdale Avenue/Riverside Park EAST OF GRAVINE RD./SR 15009N., routing northeasterly along SR 15009N./Wandering River Freeway until reaching its original terminus at I-5E exit 191A at Flower Street south of I-5E Exit 191A/Grapevine Rd./SR 1507 N.. The community prospered during World War II due to its proximity to Los Angeles; however, when war started over Nazi Germany's efforts to gain control over Central Europe via Operation Barbarossa in 1939–1940 many American citizens chose not TO fight because they saw no benefit for themselves beyond basic supplies like food and gasoline. A few did go off with arms but most local Americans chose not To get involved either out moral or political reasons preferring instead neutrality throughout both world wars although there were skirmishes between Germans & Italians living nearby (& occasional bombings)
