The Laguna Woods area was first settled by the Ohlone in the late 1800s. The Ohlone, a Native American people, were responsible for many of the local landmarks and fossils that are now located in Laguna Woods. In 1876, Rancho San Luis Rey was granted to George Hearn and his wife Maria Quintero by Governor Pio Pico. The Hearns lived there until their death in 1939. During World War II, Los Angeles County took over the rancho and began developing it into a major military base. In 1948, the California State Legislature passed Senate Bill 317 which allowed for the sale of land within 1 km of any military installation in Los Angeles County. In 1955, part of Rancho San Luis Rey was sold to developer Harry Sawyer for $1 million. The following year, Sawyer began construction on what is now known as Laguna Woods Resort & Spa.
