However, many historic buildings remain including Beaumont Army Airfield #2 which is currently being renovated into an attraction called "The Hangar". It is part of the San Bernardino–Riverside Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent residents of Laguna Woods were prospectors and miners who discovered gold in 1849. The town was founded by Capt. James Irvine on April 12, 1858, after he and his men explored an area near what is now Interstate 15. At its peak, Laguna Woods had a population of more than 2,000 people. However, it declined rapidly during the 1860s as rustling by bandits and disease caused many deaths among the original settlers. The remaining pioneers sold their land to developers in the early 1920s for development into residential areas such as Encino and North Hollywood. The last resident to live in Laguna Woods was Alice Bogan on October 9th, 1957; she sold her home to developer Walter Hickey two days before her death because she did not want to leave behind a community that she helped create but which she lost touch with over time. Today there are few traces of Laguna Woods except for a small section near Interstate 15 where some pioneer homes still stand unaltered from when they were first built 100 years ago. In recent decades there has been efforts to revive interest in Laguna Woods through support from government agencies like Bureau of Land Management (BLM), private organizations like Save Our Streets LA Chapter and individuals like Friends of Laguna Woods Incorporated since its creation in 2000 as a non-profit organization dedicated to developing sustainable communities around Los Angeles County's borders
