Laguna Woods is a resort town in Orange County, California. It is located on the Pacific Coast and it straddles the inland ocean between Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. The population of Laguna Woods was 7,808 at the 2010 census. The name means "Southern lagoon" in Spanish. Laguna Woods was settled by farmers who arrived during the Gold Rush in 1849. In 1870, John Davenport built a summer home there that became known as Palmer House. By 1915, this area had been renamed Laguna Hills after Harry Houdini's friend and business partner, George Smedley Palmer Jr., who also resided there at that time. The first post office opened in Laguna Woods on October 14, 1888. At its peak importance, Laguna Woods had more than 100 residents and mail service came from San Pedro Bay to Los Angeles via horse-drawn carts called "buses." In 1912, Harry Houdini moved from his old home in Hollywood to live in Laguna Hills with his wife Alice Babbitt and their two young children; he used the house as a place where he could entertain clients before they went public appearances or where he could escape when necessary while on tour throughout Southern California. Houdini also rented an annex (now part of the University of Redlands) adjacent to his home for study purposes while living at Palmersville Manor near Newport Beach until his death on April 14, 1926 aged 62 years old from contractions following surgery for appendicitis which would have ended his life but for successful medical research which saved many lives thereafter - including those of Marilyn Monroe and Steve McQueen! He left behind several items belonging to him such as an extensive collection of magic tricks including onefeaturing Vermicelli cheese hidden inside a wafer

Laguna Woods is a census-designated place in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Redwood City–San Francisco–Oakland Urban Area. Laguna Woods is located on an elongated neck of land between San Francisco Bay and the East Bay of Silicon Valley. The name "Laguna Woods" may derive from the Creek language word "lausa", meaning "southern point". In 1851, Capt. John Brougham saw a wooded area to the west of what is now Laguna Woods when he was exploring for new land for his surveyors: "It would appear that our present site (the Rancho Laguna) was originally intended as one of our stations on this important journey through Sonoma and Marin Counties." In 1870, real estate developer Elisha Gray laid out what is today Laguna Woods subdivision on a tract which he had bought from Juan Bautista de Anza y Alvarado. He named it after his friend and fellow investor in Gray's early business ventures—Laguga Point near Suez Canal—Elisabeth Point near Mission Bay, and Anna Lighthouse Point near Mount Tamalpais National Park. Gray also built a few homes himself but left most development to others until he sold his interest in Gray Development Company in 1922 to Louis Auchincloss who build several large homes here including ones known as Blancanieves and La Honda Oaks. After Auchincloss' death in 1954, ownership passed through various families before being purchased by Mrgr Hernan Gomez who donated it to local school board members Mary Jo Kappelman and Don Browning in 1984 who then turned it over to their children Barbara and David Gomez in 1990 whose children current own it outright . Today we enjoy many beautiful neighborhoods within our boundaries including Monterey Peninsula Center for Arts & Culture where I am graciously honored with an office building - see photo below!
