However, because oil shale was not yet producing commercially valuable oil, production ceased until 1906 when a group of Norwegian entrepreneurs leased land northeast of Laguna Hills for processing crude oil from wells being drilled by Standard Oil brothers. This led to a period where many businesses flourished within this rapidly growing town: grocery stores, dry goods stores, bakeries etcetera were all created during this time frame. In 1915 two young men by the name of Edward Jones Jr., Alfred Pyle and Harry Laughlin purchased 640 acres north of downtown Laguna Hills from Isidor Kapp founder of Paramount Pictures Corporation for $1 million dollars ($10 million today). With this purchase came control over much of what would become present day Laguna Hills; including most notably Jones Park which became home to Brown Derby restaurants (now Carl's Jr.), Olympic Stadium which hosted track & field events during the 1936 Summer Olympics as well as current day Griffith Observatory housing much needed astronomy equipment used today by astronomers around the world! The 1920s were years filled with social upheaval brought on by World War I veterans returning home from Europe with immense wealth but also newfound challenges faced within society; such as divorce rates skyrocketing and social tensions culminating into riots that took place throughout LA COUNTY!
