Laguna Hills, California is a city in Orange County, California. The population was 25,833 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Laguna Hills was first settled in 1887 by brothers John and Harry Hagerty, who named their new community after the hills near their home in Centralia, Washington. By 1901, Laguna Hills had a population of 582 people. In 1911, James Fenton organized what would become known as the Santa Ana Band of Mission Indians to provide grazing for his cattle on Rancho Cucamonga's Rinconada Indian Reservation south of Laguna Hills. In 1913 ownership of Rancho Rinconada passed from Fenton to Mexican Captain José María Pacheco and his brother-in-law Manuel Miranda y Mirabal; however it continued to be used as ranch property until 1943 when it became part of Rancho San Luis Obispo de la Cañada del Camino National Monument (now called La Jolla National Park). Laguna Hills began rapid growth following World War II with its annexation by Orange County as part of the newly formed county. The postwar boom led to an increase in housing development and increased traffic that caused congestion on nearby roads and highways. The original suburb of Laguna Hills now borders Cypress Park and Garden Grove to the east and west; it has become an annexed part of Irvine since that city's annexation in 1990. The City of Laguna Hills was created on October 1, 1972 from portions of Irvine and Huntington Beach.

In 1923, when Hollywood was founded by movie moguls Hays Code filmmakers Cecil B DeMille and others, they decided that Laguna Hills would be a filming location for their pictures; it became one of the most popular locations for movies during this time period because there was no traffic or pollution on Ventura Boulevard then (. Laguna Hills was originally part of Rancho Santa Anita Mexican land grant given to José Maria Caderey on February 24, 1785. The grant extended from today's east edge of Laguna Hills all the way to what is now central Irvine County. On July 26, 1859, after Mexico won its independence from Spanish rule, sections of Rancho Santa Anita were divided between the United States and Mexico as part of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Today's communities in Laguna Hills include La Mesa (founded 1889), Norwalk (founded 1907), Garden Grove (founded 1912), San Pedro Heights (established 1923), and Irvine (estimated date founded 1945).
