Laguna Hills is a city located in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 14,483 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The Laguna Hills post office was established on July 25, 1881. The name derives from the Spanish word "aguas" meaning water and "hills" meaning hills or mountains. Laguna Hills was first settled by Mexicans in 1835 as Rancho Buena Vista de las Aguas Calientes\Rancho Recuerdo de las Aguas Calientes. The land that now makes up Laguna Hills was purchased by British investors in 1853 and became known as Robinson's Rancho Seco. In 1870, John Robinson donated 640 acres (2 km²) of his Rancho Seco property to the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions for Mexican settlers who were to erect churches and other Mission buildings thereon. In 1878, when it became apparent that California would become an independent republic, the owners of these mission properties sold them back to the Americans and founded Laguna Hills as a community with its own government. A post office called Laguna Blanca was established at this location on May 24, 1886, but no mail ever arrived because the train station wasn't built until 1888. In 1903, Henry Wittell donated land north of SR-101 that became home to a golf course and country club called The Oaks Golf Course and Country Club which still exists today adjacent to Interstate 5 near Anaheim Canyon Park off La Brea Avenue in Glassell Park neighborhood). On December 15th 1912 Californians approved amending their state Constitution to allow cities within their borders the power to raise money through local taxes without having to go through the state legislature where they would be overruled by Sacramento City Council members who controlled state lawmakers' budgets.) This amendment resulted in incorporation of Laguna Hills as a city on January 1st 1913 under Mayor Thomas Seltzer with an estimated population of 20 people; however due to World War I military occupation it only had 7 residents until November 10th 1918 when it gained its present 14 thousand residents thanks largely to new subdivisions created along SR-101 between Sawgrass Drive and Whitewater Drive (the original plats included much of what is now Northpark Heights), annexed parts of Huntington Beach (in 1915), Hawthorne Heights (in 1916), Irvine Valley (in 1917), Cathedral City (in 1919) and much more since then! Today there are over 50 thousand people living in Lagunta Hills! Laguna Hills has been rated one of America’s most beautiful towns by publications such as “Travel + Leisure” magazine” “ Home & Garden”and many others including inclusion on numerous USA Travel Guides lists throughout history! Laguna Hills is a small town located in Orange County, California. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Irvine metropolitan area and is considered an affluent community by many metrics. The name Laguna Hills comes from two different places: one being on the banks of the San Joaquin River and another being about 20 miles west on State Route 101. The first place is possibly derived from a Native American word meaning "calming water." The second place may come from Spanish settlers who discovered gold in this area in 1849. Afterward, they named the stream after General José Moreno y Costilla, who had led Mexican forces against United States forces during the Mexican-American War. Laguna Hills was platted in 1887 by brothers George and Alfred Ladd as a small subdivision on their rancho ([now] Rancho Laguna). It was initially called simply "Laguna". The town's name originated with its location - just east of Interstate 805 and west of SR 101 - which made it convenient for farmers to bring their crops to market without having to go far into either county. In 1928, construction began on what would become known as "The Great Western Highway", which linked Laguna Hills with other communities in Orange County such as Newport Beach and Fullerton. By 1939, only 10 homes were still single-family residences; however, over the next few decades more than 100 homes were built within the limits of today's town center. In 1990, voters passed Measure V – also known as Proposition 65 – which requires all businesses with more than 50 employees to post signage informing customers that they are required to use safe drinking water supplies that meet federal standards for chemical contaminants (an example of which would be lead levels). As a result of Proposition 65, many businesses closed down or changed their business plans due to increased financial demands; however, many have since reopened thanks to local donations and support from community groups such as Waterkeeper Alliance . On July 1st 2016 referendum results showed that 95% majority of residents approved amending City Code so that property developers can no longer build new homes without following city regulations
