John Cranch patented this land from Mexican landowners near where Mission Monterey would later be built on Point Reyes National Seashore 50 years later on October 24th 1853 which gave him title to 640 acres (2 ha). The first documented reference to Laguna Heights comes from Hernando De Anza who mapped it circa 1789 during his surveyor work for Spanish General Fernando Rivera y Costilla aboard His Majesty's Ship Santa Rosa de Lima while en route between Vera Cruz and Mexico City across the Pacific Ocean (). He noted “a high mountain” () that he supposed might be called “Las Pulgas” (). This name has been variously reported as being derived from Ohlone words meaning big sea turtle (),[7] or more likely from Portuguesemeaning `a small lagoon' (). A second map made around 1810 shows property extending southward past present day Menlo Park onto Hercules Road including what is now Highland Avenue (); however this map does not include much current day Lagunitas east off I-280
In 1871, the first post office was established in Laguna Hills. In 1907, the first school opened in the community. In 1912, a textile mill was established in Laguna Hills and soon became one of the most important businesses in the community. In 1916, a large gas station was built and served as the town's mainstay for refueling cars and selling gasoline. The last time an active grocery store operated in Laguna Hills was in 1957.
