Laguna Beach, California is a town located on the Pacific Coast in Southern California. The name was given to the area by Spanish explorers in 1821. At that time, there were only scattered villages and no towns. The first permanent settler in Laguna Beach was Edwin Bogue who arrived in 1867 and built a cabin on the bluff overlooking the harbor. In 1875, John Wesley Powell became the first person to explore and map what is now Laguna Beach when he traveled along the border of Orange County and San Diego County. He named two small ponds - Rincon Cove and Mission Bay - after saints Francis Xavier (Rincon) and Pablo Neruda (Mission Bay). In 1915, three brothers, Drury Gentry, Harry Wiggin and Jock Mahoney opened The Paper Mill at 20th Street & Third Avenue which processed paper for local businesses such as banks, grocery stores and newspapers. The mill closed in 1951 but left a lasting legacy on Laguna Beach with its canteen-style restaurant called "The Ragtime Cafe". In 1957, when American president Dwight D Eisenhower visited Laguna Beach for a state visit he made an appearance at The Paper Mill which still remains open today as a gift shop/entertainment complex called Eisenhower Plaza.

Laguna Beach, California is one of the most popular resort towns in Southern California. The town is located on the Pacific Coast on a longitude line that runs from Baja California to Northern California. The name Laguna Beach comes from two Spanish words-- La Laguna and Beach. The first inhabitants of this area were the Tongva people who lived in present-day Orange County. In 1821, Mexican nationals Carlos Manuel de la Serna and José Antonio Pacheco founded Rancho San Marcos in what is now Laguna Beach. At that time there was no road or water connection between Los Angeles and Orange County so it took many days for travelers to reach this location by boat or wagon. In 1845, following Mexico's independence from Spain, General Rafael Vásquez granted Rancho Laguna Seca to Juan Rivera y Costilla. This ranch included land that now makes up part of Laguna Beach. In 1847, Pedro Menéndez Cámpora purchased some acreage east of the original San Marcos rancho and laid out a small town named Villa Hermosa which he called "Laguna." In 1875, entrepreneur Avelino Carrillo built a wharf on Point Loma which became an important commercial center for the area because it allowed easy access to fresh water resources needed for tanning hides and other leather products exported to Europe. Carrillo also built a series of small cement plants along Point Loma Boulevard which supplied Laguna Beach with both product and labor necessary for its early development as a resort town. In 1916, when World War I began, American forces occupied southern California; however they did not occupy Laguna beach until 1917 when they established Camp Anacapa near present day Doheny State Park in order to provide training for troops destined for war in Europe. During World War II American forces stationed at Camp Anacapa used their own munitions manufacturing plant adjacent to Doheny State Park as well as an airfield northwest of town where they manufactured fighter aircrafts and bombers under contract with Boeing Aircraft Company Incorporated (later Lockheed Martin). After the war ended American forces vacated both camps and began housing displaced Japanese Americans at nearby Glendale Municipal Airport until 1948 when they relocated them into concentration camps near Stockton CA
