Wessels was an up-and-coming entrepreneur who had started his own company manufacturing cigars and cigarettes. He decided to start selling guns as well, which he did with success until he was killed by a sniper while taking his dog for a walk on Christmas Day 1911. This tragedy inspired Wessels' son Harry Jr., who reopened the store under different name - Purdy's Gun Emporium - four years later. In 1916, Drusilla Carmody opened her first gun shop at 419 E Colorado Ave in Costa Mesa. Laguna Beach was founded by Spanish colonists in 1769 as a penal colony for Mule deer and other game-hunting criminals who had been caught poaching in coastal Mission San José de la Costa Verde National Park. Rancho Laguna Seca was granted to Juan Manuel Nieto in 1834 and it soon became one of Southern California's leading citrusgrowing counties. In 1886, the US military established Camp Pendleton on the north side of Laguna beach for training Marine Corps officers; this led to the growth of the local tourism industry that hasominated since then. In 1951, California Gov. Goodwin Coleman awarded a portion of Rancho Rincon del Rey to Leland Stanford Jr., brother of Stanford University founder Leland Stanford III, as part of his efforts to remake Santa Clara County into an agricultural powerhouse on par with Pasadena and Escondido. To finance this project, Coleman raised taxes on residential property values and levied new sales taxes which helped finance much else during his term as governor including state highway construction and social welfare programs such as Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC). On January 6th 1967 Mayor Sarna personally presented his idea for incorporation to City Manager Don Kappenberg who recommended approval but advised against making any changes too extensive or rapid because there might not be enough time available for a viable election campaign should it become effective before November 1st 1971 when state Constituency Redistricting would take effect resulting in some 123 residents moving from neighboring towns into our town boundaries thereby reducing its population from 23k+ down to just over 19k residents including 3k children under age 18 living within our city limits; all told this resulted In An Increase Of Only 2% In Population Relative To Current Size! Subsequently On July 10th 1969 The Ordinance creating OurCity Was Issued By Mayor Sarna At Which Time We Claimed ourselves As An Incorporated City! It wasn't long before problems began however; shortly after becoming an incorporated city we reached agreements with Caltrans #1 & #2 which allowed us access theretofor constructing roads & sewer lines etc... But these were later terminated due primarily To misunderstandings about who really controlled what & how things worked inside ourcity Limits while also creating frustrations among councillors over lack Of control over many aspects Of government operations... soon thereafter we began experiencing high water levels (& overflows) caused mainly By rains events runoff From Mountain ranges spilling Into ocean near beaches causing inundation Of streetspussing constituents)... eventually repairs were made but experience taught us never again will We Be AllowedTo Build Above Water Line Without Consent From Officialdom!
