Laguna Beach, California is a small town in Orange County, California. The population was 7,554 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Pacific Coast between Newport Beach and Laguna Niguel. The name "Laguna" means "Golden Lake." The first Europeans to visit Laguna were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1769. In 1821, Mexican nationals founded a mission here and named it San Francisco de Asís after General José Joaquín de Arguelles y Costilla, commander of Mexico's viceroyalty of California. Spanish colonists began arriving in earnest in 1843, when Rancho Rinconada was sold by Pio Pico to James Irvine for $2 million. Irvine brought over 400 families from Southern California and erected an adobe ranch house on the site that still stands today. In 1902, John D'AnConte purchased Rancho Rinconada from Irvine for $10 million and began expanding it into what became Laguna Beach. He built 9 miles (14 km) of beachfront property including Anna Maria Island where he built his villa called Villa La Jolla (now known as Pier 39). D'AnConte also constructed two hotels--the Casino Monterey and the Park Hyatt--and opened them up to the public as part of a promotional program that included free admission for everyone during seasonal events like fairs and carnivals. D’AnConte died suddenly in 1924 while on vacation in Europe; his widow continued operations until her death in 1941. In 1951, she bequeathed her entire estate—including Anna Maria Island—to the city of Laguna Beach for use as an open-air parkland with beaches, shopping centers, restaurants and other amenities desired by residents and visitors alike. A group of businessmen led by real estate developer Harry Chandler bought Anna Maria Island from Mrs. D’AnConte for $5 million on July 1, 1954; they renamed it Point Loma after one of their key sponsorships--Lagunan Airlines (later McDonnell Douglas). By 1959 Point Loma had become an important commercial center due to its excellent harbor access and its location adjacent to Interstate 5 which made it easy to get goods moving across country without having to go through Los Angeles or San Francisco Bay Area airports

In 1819, Spanish missionaries discovered oil wells in what is now Laguna Beach. The first oil well was drilled in 1878 and production began in 1882.
