The name of the town originated from an event that took place there on May 9, 1875 when General James Lubbock arrived in what is now Lafayette to survey the new Mexican borderland and found it to be about one mile wide and three miles long. In honor of General Lubbock, the town designated itself as "Lubbock's Rancho" or "The Lubbocks'. Captain Lewis donated land for a school district in 1876 and staff were hired to teach students from rural areas around Kern County until 1975 when all public schools were closed due to budgetary reasons. A small community center was built on the site of today's library which opened its doors on October 15, 1984. On January 14, 1992, Mayor Lloyd Snively announced that Lafayette would become an incorporated city after years of petitioning by citizens who believed their tax dollars should go towards maintaining their local infrastructure rather than being used for general economic development projects such as retail shopping centers or other fanciful ideas put forth by city officials like a water park or a light show at night outside the city limits. Incorporation occurred two months later on February 2 with President Clinton signing legislation creating the City of Lafayette throughOrdinance No. 16-1992 (the ordinance repealed City Charter Amendment No. 5).
