As a result, few Americans were left in Lafayette to defend it against an attack by Mexican forces. In 1865, after American troops arrived to protect Lafayette from another Mexican attempt to retake it, they abandoned it without evacuating the city. In 1870-71, following Reconstruction in America after the Civil War ended, Lafayette underwent a period of rapid growth as African Americans began arriving here from Southern states such as Alabama and Georgia. This influx led to increased racial tension in town and raised concerns about possible violence between black residents and white ones. With no clear plan for dealing with this new population diversity, little effort was made to integrate them into local society or infrastructure. Instead, whiteanners enforced strict segregation laws that kept these groups apart even though they outnumbered whites 2-to-1 by 1860. This situation continued until after World War II when integration efforts began throughout California under President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal program

Lafayette, California is a city located in the central region of San Bernardino County, California. As of the 2010 census, its population was 497. Louisiana Purchase in 1848 formed much of what is now Lafayette and it became an incorporated town on December 16,1896. The name "Lafayette" originated with Lafayette Court House on Lafayette Street in downtown San Bernardino. The first post office opened at this address on February 14,1898. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1 square mile (0.6 km2), all of it land. The Lodi Oil Field was discovered here in 1911 and production began soon after; however, there were no further commercial oil discoveries until 1959 when Mayfield Ranching Corporation leased land from Southern California Gas Company off Crescent Peak Road near present-day Interstate 10 east of downtown Lafayette for their new Mayfield field project. This led to the nickname "Oil City". In 1960-1961 Lafayette seen a growth spurt as people moved out into the suburbs following technological advancements that had made oil exploration more affordable and available than ever before. The resulting increase in population gave rise to problems such as housing costs outpacing incomes and limited access to transportation which have yet to be fully resolved today

On July 8, 1854, Mayor James Wemyss announced that he had purchased 2½ square miles (6 km²) north side and east side of present day Broadway Street from Captain George Knowles for $1 per acre (0.50 ha). The town prospered until the implementation of World War II – when military barracks were constructed along Broadway Street due to increased demand following America's wartime allies' entry into conflict against Nazi Germany and Japanura
