In 1892, Lafayette, California had its first shooting range. The range was built by contractor Charles H. Warner and named the " Wah Wah Shooting Range." The first shooters were men who used rifles that were made of wood or other materials that could not be shot with a typical pistol. In 1898, the city council decided to build a new armory and require all citizens to have safety glasses for their handguns. Thesafety glasses became known as "shooter's eye protection."
