Although General Lafayette had no military experience whatsoever when he arrived in America, his presence within these few miles of San Francisco gave rise to rumors that he could fight with great effectiveness and win important battles for our country. In 1824, Lafayette donated land to build a schoolhouse and Cemetery which are still part of the city limits today. In 1849, General Lafayette erected an elegant brick building known as "The General's House" which served as a meeting place for local officials and private individuals during horse races and other events held hereabouts. This structure still stands today along with several contributing buildings including homes, businesses, churches and other structures from this period which together form what is now known as "Old Town". One of Old Town's prominent families was that of Levi Strauss & Co., who were founded here by Levi Strauss in 1875. It wasn't until 1903 that downtown Lafitte became one continuous street grid when two blocks east of Main Street (now Market Street) the City built its first PUBLIC SCHOOLS! These schools were designed by Jules Lefebvre who also created many other earlyinstitutions such as St Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church (founded1898), Masonic Temple (established1899), First National Bank Building (completed 1901), wharf/grill house built 1902-1903 etcetera etcetera...It should be noted that most if not all these structures still remain standing today providing valuable tourist attractions for visitors from throughout Northern California! In 1917 renowned architect John Wiley Witherspoon designed Oneonta Castle - one of only two remaining examples of log cabin architecture left standing in California - for millionaire movie star Cecil BGoodrich Jr.. Due to World War II bombing raids it slowly fell into disrepair but finally underwent restoration starting in 2009 under new management resulting in an increase in tourism activities inside the castle walls! Today Oneonta offers wonderful walking trails through its gabled roofed courtyard leading up to impressive turrets overlooking downtown Lafitte while also providing excellent views over Half Moon Bay should you desire some quiet time outdoors;-)
