Lafayette is a small town located in the Kern County, California, United States. The population as of the 2010 census was 3,812. It is part of the San Joaquin Valley. The first European to sight and explore what became Lafayette was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on September 2, 1542 while exploring along the Santa Cruz coast in search for new land to claim for Spain. A few weeks later he anchored at an anchorage near present-day Lompoc and named it after Saint George which stands atop Monterey Peninsula. In 1824 Lafayette was founded by Captain John C. Fremont who had been scouting routes through the area when he came across a group of prospectors led by James Wolkowitz from Stockton looking for rich gold prospects in central California's Kern River valley. Fremont offered them land if they would move west and build him a house on their property overlooking his discoveries at Mount Diablo whereupon they renamed themselves "Fremont's Battalion". A post office called Lafayette was established in 1827 with John Prentice as its first mail carrier. In 1881, Lafayette incorporated as a city under the name of San Francisco; however it reverted to its original name upon becoming independent again following statehood in 1947. The City Council declared that "Lafayette" should be used only as an honorific title until further notice and adopted resolutions spelling out this policy on July 21, 1948; also on that date waterworks facilities were completed within city limits (the present-day Civic Center). On October 1, 1960 voters passed a resolution stating that "Lafayette" should become the official name of the City; it has been so ever since. The economy of Lafayette depends heavily upon agriculture which continues to play an important role in both local politics and culture; some foods items sold here include eggs, milk products such as cheese and yogurt, breadfruit (a type of fruit), potatoes, onions/onions, carrots/carrots, applesauce/applesauce/, celery/celery seed oil/, garlic/, green beans/, peas/. There are also some industries nearby such as aircraft manufacturing or data center services but many residents continue to rely primarily upon agriculture because there are no other self-employment opportunities available outside of farming or ranching

Lafayette is the cultural and commercial center for southeastern Kern County, home to many high tech companies. The population was 83,699 at the 2010 census. The first European settlement in what is now Los Angeles County was made on November 3, 1781 by Captain Jean Baptiste Chirico and his men from Baja California under the command of José Antonio de la Luz y Valdez. Captain Chirico's party included five sailors, two guides, and one Native American named Pacheco. The town they built became known as Rancho Palos Verdes because it lay near the palisades that protectedLos Angeles from attack by man or animal. In 1846, when Mexico achieved itsindependence from Spain, General José Joaquin Cámpora decided to move Mexican troops stationed in Southern California back into Mexico City so he could deal with internal problems there. Colonel James Kapps arrived in Los Angeles on October 5, 1846 with 1st Battalion of Infantry (now called US Army Special Forces) as part of an expedition to explore prospects for developing new land north ofLOS ANGELES Bay. On November 2nd Kapps met Mexican Santa Ana River natives who told him about Indian reserves south ofLAUFORTON GARDENS which he thought might be available for purchase if he could find enough settlers willing to settle there. He returned to LA on November 9th with reports that suitable sites had been found but no settlers had yet been lured away by offers of riches or government grants of land . On January 10th 1847 General Cámpora issued a proclamation calling for applications for grant lands north ofLAUFORTON GARDENS along both sides ofthe Santa Ana River between Mt Olivet Peak and Mt Wilson (now Hollywood). Applications were accepted throughout southern California until May 14th when only 4 locations remained unclaimed:Rancho Palos Verdes; Rancho Rinconada; Rancho Seca; and Rancho San Felipe de Jesús outside OFrecados Canyon west of Pasadena . Governor Manuel Micheltorena orderedGeneral Order No. 9 dated February 20th ,1847 authorizing entry into these areas without compensation “for those who will take up arms against our Government” Consequently more than 50 families founded ranchos within days including Monterey Park (later Gardena), North Hollywood (later Burbank), Carson Station ( later Yorba Linda), La Habra Heights (later Irvine), western Playa del Rey (later Laguna Beach) and eastern Newport Beach among others Lt Col John Alvarado entered LAFEYETT VALLEY April 6ths 1850 pursuant to General Order No. 10 ..... More than 150 families also settled around FORSTERVILLE where a post office was established May 15th 1850 . Forsterville would become oneofthe mostimportant towns in central LA
In 1847, the United States acquired California from Mexico. The area was sparsely inhabited, and the land was mostly forested and unpopulated. In 1848, General Valor Howell explored the area and recommended that the government open a road to connect San Francisco with Sacramento. On July 4 of that year, Congress passed an act authorizing President James K. Polk to build a road through the Central Valley between Stockton and Fresno. Construction began in 1850 and the first train reached Fresno on December 10th of that year. The road became known as "The Santa Fe Railway."
