In 1834 Obadiah Brawley founded an agricultural colony called Dovecot near present day Pasadena and named it after General Lafayette who had fought for America during the Mexican-American War. The town of Lafayette began to form around Dovecot with immigrants from Italy (mainly Piedmontese), Germany (chief among them Johann Friedrich Schmid), Scotland (Jock Macdonald) and Ireland (Foljambe O'Malley). A post office was established at Dovecot on December 15, 1834 under the name of "Lafayette." In 1842 John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort which served as a depot for wagon trains carrying goods upriver to Stockton and other cities along the southern route overland to California. The fort contains an interesting stone wall that still stands today as a remnant of early American settlement in this area. By 1850 there were over 100 buildings in Lafayette and about 30 people lived there full time including six teachers and four students from Grant High School located just east of downtown on Red Rock Road . In 1860 two churches were built: one called St John's Episcopal Church which replaced an original building damaged by fire two years earlier; another called First Baptist Church which became known as "Old Main" because it stood until 1861 when it was replaced by a new structure designed by George Ripley Also during this time period several stores were opened including J & W Haferware Store which later became part of Macy's department store chain A large millinery shop known as Greshams opened its doors in 1865 next door to Old Main housed within what is now Sears Tower across Market Street from downtown . This millinery shop continued operations until 1967 when it closed due to competition from more modern Milliken mills In 1870 Father Damien erected a small chapel adjacent to Old Main . dedicated specifically to Divine Mercy Parish also known as Notre Dame de Lorette Parish started serving residents here in 1870 also Father Damien later served as pastor until his death in 1903 In 1886 construction began on what would become City Hall using funds raised through public subscription . The cornerstone for City Hall was laid October 11th 1886 by Mayor James Krouse Sr., future Governor Ronald Reagan sr As mayor Krouse led Lafayette into incorporation becoming an incorporated city under state law on December 10th 1890 with approximately 60% of votes cast against incorporation but ultimately ratification allowing citizens wide latitude regarding their municipal powers having been granted via referendum On July 14th 1898 Grand Lodge #2 conferred upon Lafayette Lodge No 9 fraternal order Sons Of Temperance Incorporated chartering itself "The Knights Of Pythias" soon followed by numerous civic events such as meeting held at Temple University where then Mayor James Krouse Jr presented credentials to newly installed Grand Master Michael Lalouziere Daughters Of Temperance Incorporated Ladies Auxiliary No 1 Ladies Auxiliary Fraternal Order Sons Of Temperance Incorporated received their first Masonic degree On October 6th 1912 their lodge number changed from No 9 fraternal order Sons Of TemperanceIncorporatedToNo 22 knighthoods international organization fraternally endorsed not only our club but ourselves
