Lafayette is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 7,906 at the 2010 census. The city's main business districts are downtown Lafayette and Midway Center. The first white person to settle in what is now Lafayette was Manuel Nieto in 1851. He built a cabin near present-day Midway Center and named it after his friend General James Halleck who died during an expedition against Mexico that year. In 1875, Lafayette voters passed a resolution calling for incorporation as a town because they felt their village had not been given enough attention by officials from other cities in the county seat area. The vote resulted in incorporation as a town on July 1, 1875; this came about due to pressure from residents of Inland Empire who wanted to be close to new shopping malls opening up around them. Lafayette grew rapidly during its early years; by 1890 it had overtaken Inland Empire as the leading community in San Bernardino County. However, growth quickly slowed down after Prohibition began circulating through America which made alcohol more expensive than ever before and caused businesses throughout central California to flee into prohibition-friendly states such as Nevada or Arizona Territory where prices were lower for liquor products unavailable within these jurisdictions (the lack of state regulation also allowed additional growth). During World War II, military facilities were constructed nearby including Camp Atterbury which housed thousands of troops until 1951 when it became Patton Air Force Base; then known as Goodyear Army Air Field until 1959 when it became Dole Air Force Base . Alluding back to its early days as an agricultural center with fruit trees grown on land donated by local farmers (still visible today along Interstate 15), Lafayette now has one of Southern California's most extensive public works programs - much likevcities such as Los Angeles or Anaheim have done over recent decades – with major projects such Asphalt paving & resurfacing operations at various locations across town; streetlights & traffic signals installed; water mains replaced/repaired; developments added including housing (including single family homes) [and] professional sports leagues (e.g., pro football games) have taken place here since 1990s when surrounding areas experienced significant declines both economically & politically

It remains an agricultural township with many acres dedicated to raising livestock and crops. A train depot served Lafayette for many years until it was replaced by a new one about two miles away in 1954. The old depot building still stands as a private home. A branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad ran through Lafayette until it was scrapped in 1965.
Lafayette is a city in and the county seat of San Bernardino County, California. The population was 234,827 at the 2010 census. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century as an agricultural center and today has a diverse economy with headquarters in downtown Lafayette. The area was inhabited by the Tongva people before European exploration began. Spanish settlers named it Rancho el Caballo Blanca (White Horse Ranch), after Don José de Aguayo, captain of the Manila galleon San Antonio that ran into trouble off shore on October 20, 1769. In 1821, Lafayette became part of Mexico when it gained its independence from Spain. Mexican citizens were not allowed to own land in California until 1848, so most of what is now Lafayette was acquired through purchase or donation from Mexican landowners. In 1853, General Grant appointed John C. Frémont as United States Surveyor-General for all of California and Nevada Territory; Frémont soon realized there was potential for farming hereabouts and donated some land to the town site in 1854. A post office called Lafayette opened in 1860 because mail had been delivered twice a day between Santa Ana and Sacramento then only once a day between San Bernardino and Monterey since those two towns were separate counties at that time. The first store built in Lafayette was The Ohio Store on Main Street which operated from 1865-1867 by Jno Wiedeman & Bros., Incorporated.. That store later became known as The Great Western Drugstore which still stands today across from Main Street Theatre on Gayoso Avenue near downtown Lafayette proper
