The first European settlement in what is today Lafayette occurred during the Gold Rush era when gold seekers came to this area looking for salvation from starvation on the central coast of California. Many buildings still remain from this time including Butte House, which stood at 4th Street and Broadway until 1903; Hotel Lafayette which opened on July 1st, 1876; and Bank Building #2 which stands at 5th Street and Broadway today but was built back then as part of Bank building number 1 (built between 1849-1851). After gold seekers left Lapiedra Forks for good, settlers began arrive throughout what is now Lafayette looking for new land to colonize due to difficulties living close enough to Sacramento City for goods or services while also having access to water resources necessary for agriculture. A post office square was established at 2nd Avenue and State Street in 1861) but never used because there were no subscribers or mail carriers available due to distance or other difficulties such as transportation costs being too high compared to Sacramento City where mail service arrived regularly via stagecoach! In 1870s local farmers decided that they needed more irrigation water than could be obtained from groundwater so they set up ditches near present day Tecate Boulevard and I-5 highway providing irrigation water directly into their fields from springs that lay beneath their property line! This method became known as "the lazy boy method" because farmers would not work hard enough during dry spells or during mudslides caused by winter rains
The site of Lafayette was originally a small Indian village known as "Lafayette" on the banks of the San Joaquin River. The first European to visit this area was Captain James Cook in 1776, and he named the village after General Lafayette, an American general who fought at Saratoga and Yorktown. Lafayette's military career spanned over 20 years, during which time he served in many conflicts including the French and Indian War (1754-1763), Mexican-American War (1846-1848), and World War I (1914-1918). After his retirement from the army, Lafayette founded the University of Pennsylvania in 1825. He also became an important advocate for human rights and education reform throughout his lifetime.
