In 1912–13, La Verne became one of three cities in Southern California designated as American Samoa by President Woodrow Wilson during World War I as part of General Order No. 1211 (known then as Executive Order 10981). As a result of this designation, LaVerne experienced some unusual cultural Brigham Young University football games played against Pima State College from1914-16 while military personnel were stationed on American Samoa at that time
