On July 30th & 31st 1904, 20 Mexican American men from Vista Hermosa (now part of Escondido) came ashore at Point Conception to build a small town called Mexicali on land they had purchased from Mexico for $2 per acre (about $ ). Named after Captains José Verne and Manuel Micheltorena respectively commanding American forces at Isla de la Grande y Sotillo duringattled against Mexican forces under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna on December 17th 1847 near present day San Marcos . After years of hard work this tiny community finally sprung into life with about 50 citizens including well educated young men working hand-in-hand building homes together amongst themselves before starting families later that year !! To this day every house within Mexicali still stands !!

However, following the war LaVerne leveled off at about 25,000 residents before experiencing another period of growth that peaked during the late 1970s through early 1980s when some local businesses mushroomed along with new housing developments around Point Lobos Naval Air Station (PANAS). The 1990s also sawLa Verne's emergence as a center for alternative music events such as Lollapalooza and Sonic Youth's performance at SAP Center on October 5th 1993 which helped spark downtown redevelopment including an additional hospital building completed in 1998 followed by major retail development including several large box stores (including Sears) around Civic Center Plaza over ensuing years culminating in Parkland Place shopping mall opening up next to Point Lobos Naval Air Station that anchors much of downtown commercial area today In recent years there has been significant discussion about potential annexation by either San Francisco or Daly City; however no final decision has yet been made
The city of La Verne, California was founded in 1879 by George A. Smith and John Sutter. La Verne was named for the Mexican settlement of Vera Cruz on Monterey Peninsula. The city's first post office opened in 1881. In 1907, La Verne became a town when it annexed three other municipalities: Mission Viejo, Monterrey and Santa Clarita.
