La Verne is a small city located in Fresno County, California. LaVerne's population was 66,868 as of 2010. The city is located on the eastern border of Fresno and has a total area of just over square miles. LaVerne is bordered by the cities of Union City to the east and Porterville to the west. It sits at an elevation of 4,032 feet (1,242 meters). The first European settlers in what is now La Verne were Spanish priests who arrived in 1769 during Mission San Gabriel's establishment over in Alta California. At that time there were only about 25 people living in what is now La Verne. The mission was abandoned by 1824 and most of the residents moved out when gold was discovered near Tomales Bayou on October 20th, 1848. In 1851-52 some new settlers arrived from Mexico led by José Joaquin Chávez and they named their town after him—Chávez Street being one result - but it didn't take long for Mexicans to start moving into La Verne anyway because it became an open-air Mexican post office with three stores/cafés known as "los Chávez". In 1875 Captain George Vancouver sailed through the strait between Santa Cruz and San Francisco Harbour on his exploratory voyage looking for a route to Asia but he never made it past Monterey Point before running aground on September 12th while trying to explore Channel Islands Harbor off Northern California; all 41 crew members perished including Vancouver himself.
