The city of La Verne was founded in 1849 by landowner George A. Smith, who named it for himself and his wife, the former Mrs. John C. Nye. The first post office in La Verne opened in 1850. In 1870, La Verne became a town and was incorporated as a city by an act of the California State Legislature. The city's population peaked at over 100,000 in 1910 butdeclined to exceed 50,000 during the following decades due to urban growth and World War I impacts on the military base at Cerritos Naval Air Station (now Edwards Air Force Base). After several years of decline, LaVerne's population reached its current level of around 25,000 in 2000.
