In 1871, Charles Warton erected a brick courthouse which served as the nucleus for what is now known as downtown LaVerne. In 1896 William Randolph Hearst purchased land east of town from J.P Morgan for $2 million which he used to build Hearst Tower (now called Penn Plaza). LaVerne experienced its heyday during World War II when it played host to more than 60% of all U.S military airfields serving in both world wars including Santa Ana Army Airfield (now Donley Field) and Menlo Park Air Force Base (now Joint Base San Luis Obispo-San Jose). Since then many businesses have closed or been moved away from downtown LaVerne because of annexation by other cities such as Redondo Beach or Carlsbad since they had a larger commercial base than LaVerne did at the time
