The first post office was established at La Verne on January 6, 1848. La Verne's incorporation as a town on November 17, 1850 was the result of an election in which $5,000 were raised to finance the town's construction from property owner contributions. The first mayor of La Verne was A. B. Caldwell and the first recorder of deeds was Wm Halsey King. On July 15, 1872 the population of La Verne reached 2500 people when it annexed into Riverside County.[1] The cornerstone for City Hall was laid on October 10th 1870 by Mayor John Crain with Mrs. Butler serving as honorary chairwoman After years of growth and development over two centuries in one placeLaVerne has seen many changes both good and bad including loss of its downtown business district during the early 20th century due to redevelopment efforts by other communities nearby; however most recently rapid gentrification that has led to significant loss of jobs for local residents and displacement within their own community[2][3]
The city of La Verne was founded on December 12, 1849 by Captain James F. Landis and his wife, Eliza Jane. The City of La Verne quickly grew to become a thriving metropolis with over 10,000 residents. In 1872 the city passed an ordinance establishing a water supply system for the municipality and in 1885 it pass an act providing for the erection of a public library. The city's first school was built in 1870 and its first municipally-owned grocery store opened in 1895. In 1909 LaVerne became one of California's original 66 cities.
