The first Europeans to visit La Verne were two Franciscan monks, Father Junipero Serra and Father Francisco Xavier Chavez, in 1769. A mission was founded here in 1825 by the Recollect Fathers Manuel Nieto and José de la Luz. The town was named after Don José de la Cruz, one of the conquerors of California during the Mexican-American War. It became a town on January 6, 1851 when it was incorporated as a city by an act of the State Legislature. On November 25, 1860, La Verne became part of Mexico following its annexation by that country.
