La Verne is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 20,859 at the 2010 census. La Verne is located on the eastern edge of the Inland Empire and is bordered by Mono Lake to the north, Monrovia to the east, and Riverside County to the south. The first Europeans to enter what is now LaVerne were Spanish missionaries in 1769. It took until 1853 for another group of Americans, led by Captain John Cranch and his party of soldiers from Mexico City under General Antonio López de Santa Anna for whom Rancho La VERNE was given in 1853. A post office called "Vermont" served La VERNE from 1854-1860; it was changed to "La VERNE" on February 16, 1860. In an effort to more directly manage rancho land and prevent squatters from occupying it while they awaited news of government land offers they organized a townsite campaign known as The Vermonter Settlement which began on October 21st, 1864. On November 5th residents voted overwhelmingly (75%+) in favor of incorporation into a new city with that name after Supervisor Charles Waring Tripp who had been instrumental in helping get started on this project. The growth of Los Angeles quickly surpassed those of Riverside and San Bernardino counties combined so much so that by 1881 there were only 8 families living in LaVerne proper while 12 lived in nearby Ontario (now Ontario Hills). This rapid growth saw many businesses move into town including: gauge builder Sperry & Morse; lumber yards Messer & Broderick; blacksmiths DeWolfe & Hennepin; saddlery Pemberton Bros.; harnesses Jorgensen & Sons; grocery stores Woolworth's and Macy's department stores etc., as well as numerous churches (Congregationalist Episcopal Church being built around 1890) whose ministers offered pastoral care for locals fleeing rapidly growing Southern California during these years of dramatic social change. During World War II military activity increased as local resources were diverted towards war production needs such as heavy artillery ammunition manufacturing at Consolidated Arms Company factory west of town before returning home later that year when hostilities ended. Many military personnel lodged throughout la verne during that time some lasting up to three years according to one account while others left abruptly once their enlistments expired or were converted into civilian service elsewhere within our great country! A post office operated at "Laverne" from 1945-1948 before reopening at its present location two years later following renovations costing $250,000 dollars funded largely by private donations with hopes of restoring historic infrastructure damaged or destroyed during wartime efforts including damage done to civic center theater stockade/ Welcome Center dating back to early 1940s! As recently as 2000 about half then current laverne population resided within incorporated boundaries without any connection whatsoever with neighboring municipalities other than occasional visits here or there when services are hosted by one or more neighborly organizations like Rotary Club events etc... yet despite this lack thereof self proclaimed 'City' has managed successfully over recent years both politically and economically through various marketing platforms (www.lavenderecityieconomyblogger.com) rally's/fundraisers/parades community wide cleanups downtown summerfestivals carnival parade open house fundraiser holiday sales
