However, after the war ended things changed as businesses resumed their normal operations and the population started growing again thanks to postwar growth in industry and agriculture along with baby boomer generation coming of age that wished to live close to family while still having access to some amenities that they could only find closer home like schools and grocery stores. La Verne is now one of Southern California's largest cities with a population over 1000000 making it both economically significant as well as popular for hosting events such as Formula One races or music concerts throughout the year
The town of La Verne was founded in 1848 by James Irvine and his wife, Mary. The name comes from the Spanish word "laboratorio," meaning "workshop." In 1850, theIrvine family moved to California and founded what would become La Mesa. In 1855, they opened a flour mill in the town and soon became known for their flour products. They also developed a successful livestock breeding program. In 1876, they built a new mill on the current site of City Hall. This mill continued to produce flour until it was replaced by an automatic one in 1953.
