The first European to explore this area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 15, 1769 and his ship the San Buenaventura. The town began as a military outpost named Rancho La Hacienda de la Esperanza in 1858 after General Antonio López de Santa Anna's forces destroyed the Mexican Mission San José at Tejon Pass. La Hacienda was later renamed Rancho La quinta after Captain Gregory A. Daly of the United States Navy who led an American force against Mexico during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Captain Daly's men constructed a adobe wall around the post which still stands today. In 1924, La Quinta became part of Riverside County when it was organized from parts of Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties. It was annexed by Riverside in 1965 and has since grown into one of Southern California's most affluent towns with a population of over 20,000 residents. In recent years, growth in development within La Quinta has driven its economy towards services such as law enforcement and transportation support services; tourism is also becoming an increasingly important factor in its economy. The cornerstone for much of what makesLa Quinta so unique were two schools that opened in 1925: Our Lady Of Hope School – now known as Cathedral High School – and Our Lady Of Loretto School – now known as John F Kennedy Jr.'s Junior High School – which together served more than 2600 students until they both closed their doors in 2002 due to budget cuts made by then-Riverside County Superintendent Donny Youngblood following the Sept 11th attacks. "It [the opening of these two schools] signaled not only that there would be some kind of community center or library here but also that somebody wanted to invest money into something," says Historian Dr Jaime Gomez about how interventionist county supervisors had responded to local demand for better education opportunities post 9/11." Today many people learn about our history through visits to Our Lady Of Hope or John F Kennedy Jr.'s Junior High School where we have exhibits on various aspects such as World War II warfare and Latino culture
The city of La Quinta was founded in 1892 by George H. Hill and his wife, Sarah A. Hill. The first post office was established in 1893. The city grew rapidly during the early 20th century due to the discovery of oil and gas reserves along the Kern River. During World War II, La Quinta became a Army airbase and played an important role in the war effort as a center for aircraft manufacturing. La Quinta also played a significant role in California's gubernatorial elections of 1948 and 1954; both candidates were from La Quinta. In 1957, La Quinta was named one of America's "10 Most Significant Cities" by Forbes magazine. In 1972, it became part of Riverside County and has since grown into one of its largest cities with over 150,000 residents.
