The La Quinta Massacre took place on October 15, 1876, when three California Volunteers, Private William H. Payne, Private John H. Goodwin and Corporal George W. Hill were killed by a group of Mexicans working for the United States Government at the Rancho Los Nietos near La Quinta.
In the early 1800s, La Quinta was a small town on the edge of San Bernardino County. The first European settlers arrived in 1824 and by 1830, La Quinta had a population of about 100 people. By 1850, La Quinta had grown to about 1,200 people and it became an agricultural center with crops such as grapes and cotton. The town experienced some growth during World War II when many American soldiers came to live and work in the area. The town also grew after the war when people started moving into La Quinta from other parts of California. La Quinta has been around since 1824 when Europeans settled hereabouts, but its first mention is in a document from 1829. It is said that José Antonio Arroyo y Arellano donated land to this community for its development purposes; later on members of his family donated more land for similar reasons. In 1860, John Sutter established himself at La Quinta with his rancho (land grant) No 12 in what is now downtown La Quinta. At that time there were only 10 residents living in this small settlement – all farmers who raised crops and sold goods through their homes or businesses. Some years later, another group of Americans moved into this small community: men from Oregon who had come overland through California’s snow-capped peaks and valleys on their way to Gold Rush sites like Yerba Buena Cove and Stockton

In 1945, it became an independent city and has continued to grow since then.
