The population of La Quinta grew rapidly after it joined the city of San Diego in 2002. Residential development began to take hold in 2008 as people moved into area that had been vacant for many years. today La Quinta is one of the most diverse communities in San Diego County with over 100% Latino residents living within its boundaries

The population of La Quinta was estimated at 15,000 in 2000. The history of La Quinta can be traced back to 1853 when Hiram Stevens La Quinta and his wife Martha A. King were both born in Plymouth, Massachusetts. They immigrated to the newly formed United States with their two children-Hiram Jr., also known as Harry, and Abigail-in 1850. The couple soon found themselves struggling to make ends meet due to the high cost of living in San Diego at the time. To help support their family they worked odd jobs until eventually opening a store called The Crystal Palace on Main Street in 1854. For the next several years they managed the store well enough but continued to face challenges such as difficult competition from neighboring towns that had already established themselves as wealthy communities thanks to their new Gold Rush mineral fortunes. In 1862, after years of wrangling with members of Congress over budgets that were too tight for any local business ownerTo keep up with rising expenses caused by increased military presence throughout Southern California (due largely to gold discoveries), Hiram Sr.'s death left his two daughters -Harriet Moulton Hogg (born 1861)and Lillie Morse Hogg (1863-) Plus one son -Harry Sargent LaQuinta (1864-1939). With no other siblings available or willingto take on the responsibilities of running the family business given their young age, Harriet took upon herself primary responsibility for running the store while her sister looked out for Harry's interests primarily within church activities/services etc.? Harriot also started working at home making meals for her brothers & sisters who would come into town during holidays so they could have some food before going back home? A few months after Hiram Sr.'s death when she was 20 years old Harriet married John Fenton Chafee (1848-1922) who had been living nearby since 1840 when he first immigrated from England with his parents and five siblings.? After getting married Chafee donated land near downtown LaQuinta which later became City Park.? By 1870 there were over 100 businesses operating out side Of La Quinta including several stores owned by Mr & Mrs Chafee which generated around $5 million per year according Itself??? Most notably Mr Chafee ran a grocery store inside City Hall which grew into what is now Jamba Juice.? When World War I began America declared war on Germany on April 6th 1915 ?? More than 50% of all ingredients needed for munitions production came from Southern California?? And because most people lived close enough for shopping purposes along with plenty of transportation options these goods reached markets far beyond Northern California ??? That same year saw another significant milestone within la Quinteria community when 4 girls -Lillie Morse Hogg(born 1863), Alice Baca Morse(born 1865), Edith Nevin(born 1870) & Minnie Weems(born 1872)-married 13 year old Gilbert Greenough????? At that point women had finally gainedthe rightto vote through state government laws???? This event led directly to WWI Veterans coming Fillmore Avenue looking for employment? Although initial unemployment rates were high due mainly to menial tasks connected with war production such as building roads etc.? After four months without finding work any veterans came back home ?? First job opportunities opened up at Hughes Manufacturing Company where Gilbert worked???? When relations between America and Mexico worsened after Mexican president Domingo Faustino Cámpora refusedAmerican ambassador William Howard Taft's request for him not TO recognize Mexican independence resultant in US sanctions against Mexico w/o consequences American soldiers got deployed throughout southern California ??? As muchla Quinteria communityAs anyone else across America participated InWWI ??? Many young women blossomed into successful womens entrepreneurs during this time such as Alice Baca Morse who cofounded KNECO Radio Corporation????? Although World War II began poorly for Americadue largely USAF bombing raids targeting Japanese targets throughout Japan particularly Hiroshima plus massive amounts financial losses resulting from Manhattan Project nuclear testing –la quinteria residents remained supportiveof their country despite hard times???????? Even though many people left LAQntra during wartime because there wasn’t much economic opportunity outsideof agriculture???? Anyway after VE Daymany returnedhomeAnd helped rebuildLAQntra
The La Quinta area was first settled by the Tongva people in the late 1800s. In 1821, José Gomez granted Rancho La Quinta to Francisco Vasquez. The Vasquez family developed the land into a citrus empire that thrived until after World War II when they were replaced by other families. The current owners of Rancho La Quinta are the Cadwalladeros.
