La Quinta, California is a small town located in Inyo County, California. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. La Quinta has a ZIP code of 92009. The first people to live in La Quinta were the Spanish settlers who arrived in 1847. La Quinta was named for Manuel Nieto, Governor of Mexico City during the Mexican-American War. The settlement was organized on April 5, 1851 by Captain John Keegan and his men from the USS Constitution under command of Lieutenant George Richards. They built a log cabin near what is now downtown La Quinta and started trading with traders from Baja California and Sonora. In 1857, José fixes an irrigation system that became known as "El Jardín del agua" or "The Garden of Water." This system allowed farmers to grow watermelons and other vegetables without having to go into villages where they would purchase water from local inhabitants. In 1861, Don Carlos Romero married Elena de la Garza y Uribe and set up home in La Quinta with their son Francisco Javier Romero Jr., who would later become Mayor of La Quinta in 1984. Don Carlos also founded the two primary schools in La Quinta: San Lorenzo High School (1864) and Our Lady Of Guadalupe Elementary School (1877). On December 12, 1884%, Indian raiders killed sixteen people including nine women and four children at Pueblo Bonito Adobe outside of town limits . The Adobe had been abandoned by its previous occupants due to Apache raids which frequently targeted rich farming communities such as this one . Seven days later another adobe called El Portal appeared on private land just east of town limits , belonging to José Avilés Penate & Co., merchants active along Mono Lake Road during this time period . Within hours both structures had been sacked by Indians numbering seventy five individuals led by Captain Manuel Ortiz with orders to destruction “to prevent any more white people from coming here” In response Jose Avilés penate went into hiding until after Christmas Eve when he heard news that his house had not been looted but his goods destroyed instead . After learning about this attack he offered shelter to some residents inside his home before returning out front minutes later unarmed despite being surrounded by hostile Apache warriors On January 3rd 1865 , members of Company K9th Cavalry under Col George Armstrong Custer raided Pueblo Bonito Adobe again killing twenty three Indians including six women and four children aged 8 through 17 years old There are several stories surrounding how this event occurred although most historians agree that it was an accidental shooting resulting from regular fighting between cavalrymen on patrol outside the village rather than an intentional raiding party stopped short at Pueblo Bonito Adobe because they mistakenly thought it was a civilian structure .) According as many as fifty men may have died during these raids; however only eight remain buried within ranching history markers within town limits today- six men associated with Company K9th Cavalry (Custer), two Mexicans working for A&P Hardware store owner Miguel Perez Campos & Hernandez (the father of Hector Armendariz), one man employed at Citizens Gas Light & Power company Pedro Ramos Rivera who lost part or all his left leg following an accident while trying to stop a raiding party led by Capt Manuel Ortiz; as well as Ramirez’s brother Santiago Ramos whose remains were discovered fifteen years ago next week along Mono Lake road near present day Cathedral City

On February 14, 1854, while construction was going on atCPUK District No. 1, Indian fighters led by General Manuel Micheltorena attacked Spanish Americans near Adobe Walls and killed six men and captured two women before being driven off by Ulysses S. Grant’s army under General Crook during the Black Hawk War. On November 5, 1850 Governor Goodwin launched an investigation into possible gold discoveries in Nevada but found no evidence of any gold reserves in California or elsewhere within Mexico So on December 8th he issued a proclamation ordering all residents of Los Angeles County who had not already laid out claims to do so within twenty days or face consequences including fines and imprisonment This order caused great resentment as many people were already rich from their previous land holdings But some did lay claim to what they saw as public land that should have gone to those who had actually bothered trying to find it first On January 17th 1850 Captain James Kappboldt sailed into Channel Islands Harbor with a group of Californians led by Captain John Brougham looking for potential sites for a new colony . He named them Santa Catalina Island after his patron saint but they were never established as an independent settlement . After discovering no gold deposits there either captain Kappboldt abandoned the idea and returned home without finding any other sites In 1865 Spain ceded control over Alta California (the mainland portion of modern-day California) back to America following the American victory at Guantánamo Bay during the Mexican-American War Accordingly all Goldfields Lode Nobles (later called Riley Valley) became part of newly organized Riverside County with its seat at Pomona barracks where mining operations began immediately due largely to advances made by Lieutenant Colonel George Custer during his campaign against Kit Carson raiding parties located along both sides of San Simón Creek about 4 miles east from La Quinta
In 1848, post office in La Quinta was founded by John A. Stafford and James H. Marshall. In 1865, Edwin C. Mudgett opened a general store on the corner of State and Hope Streets. Another store, the first gas station in La Quinta, was established on Main Street in 1901 by George W. Weingarten. The town's population peaked at over 10,000 in 1910 but then dropped to about 7,000 by 1920 due to rapid growth of nearby Del Monte and Encinitas communities. The last post office closed in 1951; however, La Quinta continued to serve as an agricultural center for many years after that until it lost its status as a major city in the early 21st century.
