The city was founded in 1871 by Mexican immigrants who came to California to work on land grants. The city was initially named after José Pedro Márquez de la Portilla y Fernández-Armesto (1853-1926), an officer in Mexico’s Mexican War who later became governor of California. In 1892 he donated land to make up what would become La Puente Creek Park. Today part of Shasta National Forest is located within the boundaries of the city limits. During World War II, La Puente played an important role as one of two American military airfields in Southern California—the other being Moffett Field—and frequently supported Allied forces with its vast amounts of munitions storage and research facilities during that time period. The city also experienced significant growth following World War II: by 1960 it had reached its current size with 10,811 residents living in 972 buildings across 16 wards or districts.[1] The population peaked at 14,713 in 1970 before gradually declining until 2003 when it shrank to 11,802 people[2][3]

In the early 1800s, La Puente was a small farming town in central California. The town was founded by Juan Chiapeño and his wife, Marcela. Chiapeño named the town after the mountain Pueblo de Los Angeles (Puente), which he saw while traveling through California. In 1853, La Puente became a city and was renamed to La Habana. The City of La Puente was established on April 15, 1853 when it was incorporated as part of San Bernardino County. On November 20, 1860, La Puente became an independent city under the rule of Mayor Lorenzo Mataisona with a population of 581 residents. On December 1st 1861, Mayor Mataisona resigned due to ill health and Robert Ritchie assumed office as mayoralty until January 1st 1863 when Captain John Waddell took office. On February 6th 1863 Captain Waddell ordered the militia to fire on a crowd of unarmed citizens who had assembled at Rancho Seco to protest annexation into Los Angeles County by that time known as Orange County. One man died and seventeen people were injured in what is now called "The Battle of La Puente." Captain Waddell later testified before Congress that there was no justification for firing on unarmed civilians and he offered his resignation instead because he could not continue leading an organization that amounted to lawlessness within the city limits. A commission appointed by President Abraham Lincoln exonerated Captain Waddell from any blame in the shooting and recommended him for appointment as Sheriff of Los Angeles County but this did not materialize due to political factors at that time. La Puente was founded in 1795 by Spanish pioneers and is one of the oldest cities in California. The city's first store was opened in 1824. La Puente experienced a period of growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s when its population increased from around 10,000 to over 100,000 people. However, during the 1930s and 1940s La Puente experienced a series of civic unrest that led to several violence outbreaks. In 1951 La Puente was renamed after Manuel Noriega while he served as president of Panama
