It was founded by Mexican immigrants in 1871 as Victorville and named for José Antonio La Puente, who had come to America as part of the 487 Mexicano refugees who arrived at Ellis Island on December 12, 1866. The city was incorporated on May 14, 1879. La Puente's growth began with the development of fruit orchards and citrus groves in the early 20th century; these industries quickly gave way to other businesses such as light industrial production and ranching during the late 19th century and into the early 20th century. The population grew rapidly after World War II until it reached its peak in 1950 with over 100,000 residents. However, since then la puente's fortunes have waxed and waned: most recently it has experienced modest growth due to factors such as high housing costs and an aging population. Today, La Puente is a bedroom community serving Hollywood Hills and surrounding neighborhoods; however its rich history makes it an important destination for visitors interested in both its culture and its history. The first Spanish settlers in what is now Los Angeles were Franciscans from Mexico City who traveled through Baja California in search of land grants that would offer them a better life than living under Anglo rule (the area around what is now La Puente was part of this same province). They arrived July 10–11 december 12 1866 aboard ship "Villahermosa" from Acapulco With approximately 487 Mexican refugees fleeing anti-Mexican violence they landed on Ellis Island near present day LAX airport which was then known as Victoria Park before being given the town name Victorville after General José Antonio Villahermosa who had led their group ashore north of Santa Monica Harbor. The original buildings located today along Main Street were built between 1870-1871 when many Mexicans coming west looked for places to settle down where there wasn't much else going on because of war efforts happening back home including Pueblo Revolución which took place January 6-9 1847 at Chihuahua Cathedral resulting in over 50% casualties among Mexican soldiers while fighting against US forces during Mexican-American War also known as Rancho Verdugo Adobe Campaign which ended September 9 1846 when Californios surrendered following days long battle at Cahuenga Pass also resulting in over 400 dead American troops outnumbering Mexicans Sheriffs Dept deputies& volunteers killed some 523 mostly Americans & 3 sheriffs deputies wounded all making it one of largest massacres involving U.S Army up until that time

In 1848, the town became a part of Los Angeles County. The population of La Puente grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its location on the Central Valley and its proximity to both Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. During World War II, La Puente was an important military base because it housed the United States Army Air Forces' Twelfth Air Force headquarters.
