The club continued to meet until 1865, when it disbanded because of the lack of arms available to them. In 1898, a new rifle club was formed in La Puente and soon after began trading firearms with other clubs across California. On December 17, 1911, the National Rifle Association (NRA) was founded in America and La Puente became its first affiliate. The NRA continues to exist today as one of the world's largest organizations behind gun rights.
In 1871, Mexican immigrants, including José María La Puente, founded the town of La Puente in central California. The town quickly became a center for Mexican American culture and politics. La Puente was also a major center for transportation and commerce. In 1916, the city merged with neighboring San Bernardino County to form Riverside County. The city's fortunes declined during the 1920s and 1930s as farming lost its favor in the area and automobiles arrived to take advantage of new roads and highways. However, since World War II, La Puente has been an important cultural and political center in Southern California. In the 1990s-2000s, La Puente experienced rapid growth as it became known for its arts scene and its economic opportunities in the agricultural sector. The city is bordered by Pomona on the south side, Claremont on the west side, Arroyo Seco on the north side, Encino on top of Los Angeles County to its east and northeast, Menifee Canyon to its southeast; Yorba Linda is located just across Interstate 5 from downtown La Puenta. According to 2016 census data,[1] there are over 203,[2] hundred[3][4] households[5][6] within La Puenta City limits and more than 1 million people living within boundaries that encompass both unincorporated areas annexed by or included withinLaPuente Municipal District (LAPD) as well as portions of Riverside County outside of LAPD jurisdiction
There has been a lot of debate over the past few decades about how best to store firearms. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location at the junction of two Routes 66 and 21. La Puente became a key transportation hub for early settlers and was a center of trade and commerce. In 1861, La Puente seceded from California and formed its own state, but it quickly lost its status as an agricultural center due to competition from nearby San Francisco. By the late 1800s, La Puente had become a small bedroom community with few economic opportunities. However, in 1905, the city council decided to make La Puente the capital of what would later be called Kern County. This decision helped spur development in the town and helped increase its population by 50%. By 1916, La Puenteconnected with other cities through annexation and began to enjoy increased prosperity thanks to heavy industry such as agriculture and manufacturing. However, World War II destroyed much of Kern County's economy and forced many people out of their homes. The war also led to increased immigration into Kern County thanks to offers of job opportunities in El Paso or Phoenix. As population growth slowed throughout the postwar period, La Puenta experienced some decline until becoming an again thriving community by 2000 census count
In 1846, the Mexican government gave land to José Joaquín de la Puente for the town of La Puente. The town was named after General Francisco Santa Anna and it was founded in 1848. In 1870, the town had a population of 5,000 people. On January 1, 1876, La Puente became part of California when it became a section of Mexico City.
