In 1886, Mayor José Garza donated land to build a public school system which later became known as Garza Elementary School; also built there were Chavez Junior High School (1887), Garza High School (1901), Garza Senior High School (1907), and now Chavez Middle School which opened in 1977 On October 12th 1903 Mexican soldiers from Los Angeles attacked Encinal with a view to destroying it as an act of retaliation for the Uprising of Porfirio Díaz against Porfirio Chávez . In response General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Mexicans living within 3 miles of his rancho (" las calles" ) to leave without food or water or they would be executed Within hours over 100 people had been killed including 30% of la puente's male population Most residents left before dawn on October 13th 1903 but some took what little food they could carry with them before being driven out by federal troops commanded by Colonel John Sutter One man who didn't leave was rancher Manuel Mijares who provided food for the troops while sheltering his cows inside his adobe home until they departed Aftermath: over 50 buildings were destroyed or damaged including most notably la puentecita (the city gates) whose beam broke during the attack)+ many homes destroyed or burned down+ several dozen Mexican nationals executed
