He then began working on a ranch near Monterey before becoming a wine sorter at the San Francisco Examiner in 1835. In 1840, La Puente married Maria Elena Gutierrez. They had two children and lived for many years in Monterey before moving to Paso Robles, CA in 1862. There he became a justice of the peace and served as an unofficial delegate from California to the United States Congress. In 1870, he died at the age of ninety-six after serving twelve terms as Representative from California.

The Tongva built a small village on the current site of La Puente in the mid-19th century. In 1821, Mexican Captain José Joaquin de Arguelles founded the town of Santa Fe de la Union near what is now downtown La Puente. In 1834, Rancho Los Angeles was granted to Alvarado and his brother Jesús Garza by Governor Manuel Micheltorena. The rancho included land that later became La Puente. In 1888, Juana Carrillo y Mendez donated land to build a convent and school at present-day Cathedral Avenue and Broadway Street in honor of her late husband Don Diego Carrillo y Mendez. A year later, she also donated money for a public square on the same site. On April 20, 1886, when Don Fernando Elizondo y Costilla was elected president of Mexico after defeat by José María Madero in the general election of 1885, he moved into his presidential palace atcalla (now part of City Hall) at 860 Avenida de la Reforma in preparation for inauguration on October 14 that year. Thereportedly occurred an assassination attempt against Elizondo with explosive charges hidden inside a pillow case which failed to detonate; instead it caused minor injuries to both him and his secretary Francisco Moreno Vallejo. Despite this incidentelection results showed Madero with an almost clear lead over Elizondo; nevertheless on October 14 there took place what is known as "el congreso" or "the night of democracy", during which many political dissidents were arrested or killed including Amadeo Castellanos and Manuel García Márquez
