In the early 1800s, a man named Juan Manuel La Puente purchased the Rancho San Fernando from José Joaquín de Alvarado. The ranch was located in present-day La Puente, California. La Puente renamed it the Rancho Los Feliz and began to cultivate grapes for wine production. He also built a small chapel on his property for religious purposes. In 1857, he sold the ranch to Mariano Castro and donated some of his land to build Mission Santa Margarita de la Reina de los Angeles (Mission San Francisco). The mission was founded by Father Junípero Serra and served as a center for evangelism and education in Southern California. Over time, the missionaries developed an efficient agricultural system that produced crops such as wheat, barley, cotton, tomatoes, onions, and other vegetables. They also constructed several buildings including the church and convent which still stand today. In 1886, Mexican revolutionaries stormed the mission during an uprising against Spanish rule. The native Californios who had sided with Mexico were slaughtered or captured along with many of their leaders including Father Junípero Serra. As a result of this event known as la Guerra de Nuestra Señora del Rosario (the War of Our Lady of Rosary), most missions were abandoned in southern California between 1887 and 1893. However, Mission Santa Margarita continued to be functioning as a long-term religious center until its closure in 1954due to budget cuts at all government institutions nationwide during that period of social turmoil known as “The Great Depression”
