These bilingual communities continued to thrive until the late 19th century when waves of English-speakers arrived to take advantage of agricultural improvements, industry growth, and streetcars that service downtown Los Angeles.
La Puente, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 113,821 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of Los Angeles and is bordered by Anaheim to the east, Carson City to the south, Pasadena to the west and Bel-Air to the north. La Puente is one of Angelenos' most diverse cities with a strong Mexican American and East Asian presence. The name La Puente comes from Rancho Encinas de las Flores which was founded in 1881 by José María de la Garza y Costilla. In 1907 it became part of the Spanish Empire as part of Diego Rivera's public works project called "Pueblo Libre". The area now known as La Puente was first settled by Californios in 1853 although some claim that Juan Bautista Alvarado may have been among them. In 1863 Antonio Cámpora built a grantee rancho (or mission) named Rancho San Vicente y Teodoro al pie de las Flores "(Rancho Santa Vicente y Teodoro at high point on Flores Avenue)", near present day Downtown LA; this ranch gradually increased in size until it included parts of what are today Chinatown and Little Tokyo. In 1871 Josefina Carrillo granted land bounded by 4th Street on the east side of town and 3rd Street on either side of Indian Road (now Lancaster Avenue) to José Hernandez who used it for grazing his cattle until he sold it in 1886 for $5,000 to Pico Dominguez who subdivided it into lots for sale. On June 15th 1890 Manuel García married Caridad Vasquez (born c1846) daughter of Santiago Vasquez from Canoga Park who had arrived inLA about 1840 with his parents after escaping Mexico duringindependence War; they lived at 627 North 2nd St., La Puente before moving to 1201 West 16th Ave., Pomona where Manuel started techincal school but died young 2001). They had 8 children: 5 sons Francisco (1911-1996), Ramón Valdés (1915-2004), Enrique García (1920-2006), Rosa Mendes Garrido (1925-2005), Eduardo Vargas Reyes III (1929-) and Jesús Cabrera Vargas Jr.(1945-) 2 daughters Elisa Ortiz(1900-)and Dolores Ramos(1905-) In 1912 Pico Dominguez bought Lots Nos 10 & 11 from Manuel García for $10,000; these Lots were located now at 1708 N First St., Suite 102bd/cLa Cantera Hills In 1914 Pico Dominguez bought Lots Nos 1 & 2 from Dolores Ramos for $10,000; these Lots were located now at 1436 South Beverly Blvd., Suite 201bd/cWest Hollywood

La Puente is a small town in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California, located east of Pasadena and west of Van Nuys. It was founded by José Padilla and his wife María de los Ángeles Peralta in 1876 as a small cluster of log huts on the banks of the San Gabriel River. The original name for La Puente was Presidio del Panamá. A year later, the padres moved to what is now known as recto 16 in Pioneer Park. In 1878, they had their first child, Jesús Francisco Padilla y Rivera (born December 17th), who would grow up to become one of La Puente’s most renowned residents and philanthropists. In 1886, Padilla donated land to build a school for his children. The school became La Salle High School after it opened in 1889. One year later, María Peralta gave additional land to the school which became la Universidad de La Puente (UCLA). In 1916–1917, UCLA constructed its first building which still stands today – the buildings that now make up la Facultad de Derecho at la Universidad de La Puente-Los Angeles (UCLA Law School). After years of struggling financially during World War II due to scarce resources, Padilla donated all assets and liabilities associated with his business empire including two vineyards in Santa Ynez Valley to UCLA for use as a research farm; these were designated viticultural faculties under then new UCLA Dean Arturo Gutman’s leadership and continue today as part of UCLAs wine program undergraduate students from around the world conducting undergraduate research at our stately old campus near downtown LA
In 1846, Mexican landowner José Antonio Vallejo purchased 8,000 acres of land on the east bank of the San Gabriel River in La Puente. He named it Rancho La Puente after his home town of Puebla, Mexico. The Vallejos lived there until 1850 when they sold the ranch to Manuel Nieto and his family who ran it until 1907. In 1912, Eduardo Ortega bought the ranch and renamed it Rancho Los Alamos National Monument after three of America's most famous nuclear scientists: Ernest Lawrence (1884-1956), Edward Teller (1895-1976) and Sheldon Cooper (1902-1971).
