Some of the first target holders were made in La Palma, California in the late 1800s. These devices were simple to make and consisted of a piece of wood or metal that was drilled four times with a small hole in it, then covered with a cloth or paper. The shooters would place the target holder on the ground and hold onto one of the two ends of the drill bit, so that they could focus their aim on the target. The other end of the bit was used to lift up the cloth or paper covering and release the target. In 1821, when California became a part of the United States, it was named for the Spanish colony of La Palma on Isla de la Juventud. The name is derived from the Nahuatl word palamutl (meaning "Island of Youth"), because the area was young and unpopulated when first explored by Spaniards. The first successful attempt to establish a permanent U.S. military presence in California was made in 1846 by General Zachary Taylor and his forces under Lieutenant Colonel George Custer, who led an attack on Mexican fortress of Presidio La Paz. After months of fighting, Taylor's force emerged victorious and discovered Rancho San Francisco del Norte - now known as Los Angeles - about 12 miles east of present-day Pasadena. It wasn't until 1868 that American settlers began to arrive in large numbers, replacing many of the retiring Mexicans who had settled in what is now Southern California during the previous decade. One reason for this influx may have been their hope that Mission San Gabriel would be converted into a U.S.-run arsenal like those located at Fort Stockton and El Paso in Texas or Sacramento and Placerville in Nevada; however, despite numerous petitions from Americans, no action was taken until after General Scott's disastrous Expedition against Mexico proper in1867 which resulted in over 60 dead and thousands wounded including General Manuel Micheltorena. Californians were generally supportive of President Andrew Johnson's efforts to gain control over Mexico following its unsuccessful war witharesistance faction called The Californios led by Governor Manuel Micheltorena which ended with Mexican military occupation across most of southern California beginning on February 16th,1869 followed shortly thereafter by American occupation once Mexican troops were removed from all but two small portions including Orange County where John Fonda later established himself as an actor/director). In 1870s there commenced what has come to be known as the Gold Rush era due principally to new sources discovered alongsincomparable prices for gold than had ever been found before even though initial exploration only produced intermittent Mineral rights covering an estimated 6 square miles within today's downtown LA boundaries
