In 1871, when Captain George Hearst bought the Rancho Santa Anita from José Manuel Guerra for $1 million dollars, he made La Palmawia his new ranch headquarters. At that time Los Angeles was still a wild west where anything could happen. La Palmana prospered until the 1906 San Francisco earthquake destroyed most of downtown San Francisco and much of southern California including La Palmana Missionary District; all but two buildings at La Palmana remain standing today (the only one being abandoned). Businesses failed to return to their previous levels because people were worried about possible re-occupation by Mexico following US annexation of California during World War II and subsequent development plans within San Francisco – some associated with Hollywood moguls like William Randolph Hearst who controlled movie production throughout most of California.– However no major Mexican activity took place outside American borders during peacetime.– After WWII there was increased movement into central valley cities such as Fresno and Visalia due to easy access to cheap labor needed for post-war reconstruction efforts.– By 1960 most Mexicans living west of Interstate 5 had repatriated back east across America’s then open borderland.– however many residents from northcentral Valley towns continued to reside there even after Mexican reunification in 1994
La Palma was a Spanish settlement in present-day California, located on the southern tip of the island of Catalina, about midway between Los Angeles and San Diego. The first permanent Spanish settlement in what is now Orange County was founded by Juan Bautista de Anza on November 1, 1769. La Palma soon became a important port for goods moving from the Mexican mainland to California. In 1821, Mexico gained its independence from Spain and established its own government; because of this change in power, La Palma came under Mexican jurisdiction. In 1846, following the Mexican–American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna discovered and occupied Los Angeles for his Confederate forces. On October 26 of that year, he ordered General José Joaquín Cámpora to burn down La Palma and all other Spanish settlements in Southern California as part of his campaign against Mexico's still-powerful Central American armies. The order was carried out two days later at dawn by Cámpora's force of 10 artillery pieces and 2 cannons. The burned down settlements were among the many casualties during Santa Anna's successful war effort against Mexico's northern neighbor. Aftermath included extensive depopulation (the majority of la palmas residents had either died or emigrated), as well as an increased number of American settlers moving into what is now Orange County to take advantage of new opportunities created by Mexican independence. In 1862, after disagreements over control over Southern California led to the US-Mexico War, President Abraham Lincoln signed legislation creating Alta California Territory including la palmas; however it would be another decade before any development occurred there beyond agriculture and ranching until 1964 when El Capitan Dam was constructed nearby
