In 1849, when Mexico gained independence from Spain, Los Angeles became part of Mexican territory. However, because LOS ANGELES COUNTY was established only two years later (1850), no one really paid much attention to it until after Gold Rush times when LA PALMA became an important center for trade with miners all over California. After 1880s when white families began moving into LA PALMA from Northern California (due to cheap land prices), la palma quickly lost most of its population due to expensive housing developments being built nearby or poverty becoming entrenched among residents caused by lack of opportunities outside of La Palma

The city of La Palma, California was founded on December 21, 1853 by Don José de la Cruz y Mirabal. It was named after the Spanish island of Palma, which is located about 20 miles to the south of La Palma. The first European settlers in La Palma were German and Italian immigrants who arrived in 1852. After a few years, the Germans left for reasons unknown and the Italians took their place. In 1857, two Californian entrepreneurs named George Atherton and James Irvine bought land east of the main square in La Palma for $1 million. They began to build a large rancho that would include over 100 lots that would eventually form what is now known as Riverside County. The county seat of Riverside County changed from San Bernardino to La Palma several times during its early years before finally settling into its current location on May 14, 1893. As part of this shift, much of downtown La Palmas business district moved to Los Angeles or other nearby cities while larger parts of the town continued to operate behind closed doors. The county courthouse still stands today and is used as a public library; it also houses some federal records related to antitrust law case hearings between AT&T and Bell Laboratories in 1934-35. During World War II, many soldiers stationed at Muroc Army Airfield near LA PALMA learned how to fly Mustangs from pilots training here at various airfields around Southern California including Edwards AFB (Rancho Santa Anita), Placentia/RNA (northwest corner off US 101), Lancaster AFB (southwest corner off I-5), Victorville AFB (near Simi Valley) and Buena Park Naval Air Station just north of Anaheim Hills – all within easy driving distance from Muroc . Some notable Mustangs flown by American fighter pilots during World War II include: LtCol John Boyd’s ‘Hellcat’ squadron operated out of Instrumentalin AFB south El Sobrante Island; SgtOscar Estrada flew P-38 Lightning jets with VMF(A) 312 unit based at Northrop Field; MajMajGen Leslie Jorgensen led Vought F4U Corsairs flying out Ofishek AFB near Big Sur
In 1868, the American Missionary Association founded La Palma on an uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean. It was the first Christian mission in the area and served as a training ground for missionaries. The mission's pastor, Father José Vasconcelos y Quiñones, started preaching Christianity to the local Polynesian population in 1872. In 1898, La Palma became part of Mexico and was ruled by a Spanish military governor until it was annexed by California in 1902.
