In 1888, the first practical light microscope was created by a team of scientists at the University of Manchester. The microscope allowed for the observation of small objects up to 50x magnification. In 1912, Edwin Land patented an improved version of his microscope, which he called the Landau–von Neuman microscope. This microscope permitted for the observation of objects at a range of 300x magnification. In 1938, German scientist Wilhelm Conrad Rheinberger developed a new type of optical amplifier known as a photosensitive drum amplifier (PDA). This device allowed for greatly increased image brightness and resolution when observing microscopic images. By 1945, all microscopes were able to use photosensitive drums to obtain images up to 4 times greater in resolution than before.
The island of La Palma, located in the Pacific Ocean about 120 miles west of Los Angeles, is best known for its dramatic white-sand beaches and clear blue waters. The site was first occupied by Native Americans in the late 18th century and later became part of Spanish California. In 1821, Mexico ceded California to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The area that now includes La Palma was added to American Samoa in 1959. Since it was an uninhabited outcrop at sea, La Palma experienced very little human activity until about 1830 when a group of Spanish Missionaries began preaching Christianity to the native population. In 1836, Mexican troops arrived on La Palma and began ordering the natives to leave or be killed. A smallpox epidemic that struck the island in 1840 killed most of the Missionaries, who were buried onsite with their supplies and equipment. In 1851, Spain agreed to protectLaPalma from any possible US attack by paying $10 per head for each Indian removed from the island during this period. The US government also agreed not to interfere with local religious ceremonies or land affairs on La Palma without prior approval from Spain. In 1861, following annexation by America, San Francisco mayor James Kossuth opposed President Abraham Lincoln’s efforts to annex more territory into America through executive order because he felt that such action would only benefit Republican Party politician John D “Crazy John” Larkin rather than represent American interests. Kossuth mobilized a group of citizens including sign painter George Catlin and poet Robert Frost to write a letter protesting Lincoln’s actions; their protest eventually led to Larkin being impeached and removed from office after just one term (1863–65). In 1865 Congress passed an act purchasing all remaining land east ofuezon Bay (the southern tip of LA) for $2 million; this Act designatedLaPalma as part of LA County which was established March 1st, 1896. On July 14th 1902 voters approved Proposition 23 which required individuals over 21 years old living onLa Palmafrom November 15th onward purchase a permit from Municipal Manager Harry Jansen in orderto allow them access totoplayground games available at nearby Anza Field Park (now Dodger Stadium). This ordinance effectively banned gambling onLaPalmanislandand createdthe first casinoinLA County.(SeeAnzas Casino below) On October 16th 1907 Juan Barros resigned his position as MayorofLApalmacounty after allegationsofcorruption relatedto his ownershipoftheseastreetcasino,.Barroswas laterconvictedof Treasonandimprisonedfor sixmonths
