The town of La Palma, California was founded in 1849 by Captain John Sutter and his brother-in-law, George C. Beall. The two men named their town after the Isla de las Palmas, a small island near present day LAX Airport. In 1852, Captain Sutter built the first permanent adobe house in La Palma. In 1861, he married Maria del Carmen Aguirre and moved to San Francisco with her. They had six children: Don Carlos (1861-1934), José Antonio (1863-1939), María Isabel (1866-1945), Santiago Ascencio (1868-1945), and Margarita Elena (born 1870). Captain Sutter's wife died in 1885 and he married Amalia Mexicana Martinez on November 12 of that year. They had one child: Manuel Amalfitano Sutter born March 14, 1886 at La Palma. On July 1st 1898 Captain Sutter sold his share of the rancho Santa Anita to Los Angeles City Councilman Julius Rosenwald for $750 cash plus $150 worth of railroad bonds which were then worth over $2 million dollars today! Rosenwald donated the land to the city for use as an open space preserve known as Griffith Park today!
