The name “La Palma” was given to the island by Captain James Cook while he anchored off the coast of Isla de la Palma on October 10, 1793 during his final voyage around the world. At that time, Captain Cook named both Islas Canaries after Princess Charlotte Amalie of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach—an old German princess who had married King George II of Great Britain—but he left no record of this decision. In 1860, La Palmas became an official U.S. territory following American independence from Spain. From 1861 until 1959, LaPalmas was governed by a board appointed by President Franklin D Roosevelt with responsibility for civil government and education; although it remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became annexed into Puerto Rico as part of the Jones Act Amendments package passed Congress during World War II().
