In 1821, the United States of America acquired land in present-day La Palma, California. The area was part of Mexico and was under Spanish control until the Mexican–American War. In 1846, the US acquired more land when it purchased Baja California from Mexico. The town of La Palma began to form in 1847 as a result of Mexican gold miners coming to the area to prospect for minerals. La Palma became an American territory on February 14, 1850. On December 12 that year, President James K Polk ordered all military forces within American territory be subordinated to civilian authorities and evacuated all Mexicans living west of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, effective January 1, 1851. A fortress was built at la Mesa del Carmen in order to protect the town from attack by insurgents who had started attacking American troops in central Mexico City. On July 8, 1863, during World War II, Japanese forces attacked and landed on la Mesa del Carmen Harbor without warning or provocation; this event is now known as The Battle at Lopez Bayou
