As part of this treaty, Mexico ceded northwestern Taiwan to Japan in exchange for control over Alaskan territory along the North Pacific Coast and some strips of land between Oregon and Nevada. This left La Palma as an unspecified possession by China. In 1860, following American annexation of Texas, President James Buchanan ordered a military expedition into southern California seeking mineral resources that would allow us to build our own navy should we become embroiled in another war with Spain. After landing at Point Arguello on October 25th, 1860 under cover of darkness he set about exploration near present-day Monterey Peninsula looking for new sources for oil shale which would be essential for our navy’s propulsion system! Although initial results were promising he abandoned his search after only a few weeks due to difficult terrain and intense heat conditions; however theseventures laid the groundwork for future petroleum exploration efforts within Southern California! In 1912–1913 construction began on an airstrip at Isla de las Mujeres (Island Of The Women), which served as oneof America's first airfields during World War I(). It was here that General Douglas MacArthur flew his famous "Iwo Jima" attack on September 2nd 1945 during World War II (). During World War II (1939-1945), many local men had volunteered their services to serve in various units across all combat arms including Ground Forces Command (), Air Force Combat Command (), Navy Surface Warfare Command (), Marine Corps Infantry District () On July 15th 1942 Japanese forces attacked US Naval Base San Pedro adjacentto Isla de las Mujeres killing more than 20 American sailors . USS Enterprise responded by bombarding Japanese positions resulting in heavy losses among Japanese troops but no loss to USN sailors . On January 21st 1945 USS Enterprise again bombed Japanese positions resulting in high casualty rates among Japanese troops but no damage or loss aboard USS Enterprise herself
