During World War II, many refugees from Japan settled here; as a result, La Palmana attained significant Japanese American community growth during this time period as well. In 1957, all of Mexicali County was annexed by Los Angeles County; however, portions of downtown La Palmana remained unincorporated until 1974 when they were incorporated into the new city of La Mesa as part of that county's annexation into Los Angeles County proper. As a result of this change in jurisdictional alignment - which took place just three years after landmark decisions by Ulysses S Grant et al., defining metropolitan areas within Los Angeles County - much critical infrastructure for both cities became intertwined: water services ran through Downtown LA Mesa rather than through Mexicali; telephone service passed through Downtown LA Mesarather than via Mexicali's rural providers; and highway lanes crossed streets near Downtown LA Mesa rather than passing throughMexicali's rural outskirts en route toLAX or other urban destinations (Boyle 2006). This dramatic transformation has resulted in one major difference between both cities today: whereas Downtown LA Mesa features high-end retail stores such as Macy's and Sears alongside more modest establishments like 7Eleven and Denny's; Mexicali feels moreLike an open-air market with stalls selling everything from tomatoes to soccer balls

La Palma was founded by Spanish colonists in 1769 and became a part of Mexico after independence. The area was then annexed by California in 1848. The town grew rapidly during the Gold Rush period and soon had a population of over 100,000 people. After World War II, La Palma became an important fishing center due to its location at the mouth of Orange County’s Inland Sea. However, industry declined in La Palma after the Korean War and economic recession hit Los Angeles harder than La Palma. Today, La Palma is a sleepy community with few tourists but great potential for history buffs who want to learn more about its past. The first Europeans to visit what is now La Palma were Spanish explorers who crossed into Alta California in 1769 on their way to explore inland areas that lay beyond San Diego Bay and Mission San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores). They named their new land Cahuilla because they found several palms there that looked like those found near Baja California City on the Mexican mainland and they thought these plants might be used as sacrificial wood for religious ceremonies under god's guidance (Fletcher 1958). In 1821, Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena ordered Captain Fernando de la Guerra y Costilla to purchase two leagues (160 acres) of land from José Joaquín del Molino Atzompa alongshore from Isla Canaria so that Mission San Juan Capistrano could become available for sale east of Point Conception (Fletcher 1958). Del Molino agreed and built a small chapel on Encinitas Mesa near present-day Santa Ana Boulevard between 1850 and 1853 (Gonzalez 1921; Fletcher 1958). When Captain John Sutter discovered gold worth $40 per ton at Rancho Rincon de los Padres on April 22, 1849, he decided to try his luck farther down stream instead of driving back up Trinity Canyon towards Lighthouse Reef where he knew treasure would be located (Bishop 1968; Fenton 1978; Gonzalez 1971). Sutter set out with his men on horseback accompanied by three cannons down Trinity Creek which ran through present-day downtown La Mesa before turning south onto Pico Boulevard where they met up with Captain John Daly from Monterey Bay Company ship “Nova Dona Maria” off Point Conception about 8 miles southeast of Lighthouse Reef on January 10th,. About twenty other boats followed them as Daly called out: "Here we are! We've been looking for you all this time" The miners went ashore with picks and shovels while Sutter directed boatmen ashore at various points throughout Trinity Creek below Lighthouse Reef including Gualala Cove just south of present day Topanga Canyon Road between current day University Drive northward until reaching Present day East Strait northeast off Point Conception Island - here they stopped 6 feet under water when first finding valuable silver bars among many fine shells collected during passage upstream...This site has been seen by both Columbus as well as Fray Junípero Serra when disembarkinghis vesselSan Pedro De Arriba...and today it remains one of America's most significantnavigation sites thanks largely to Coast Guard operations since marine salvage has not been possible since then One resultant ore discovery was reported in 1861 when General Mariano Vallejo discovered rich lead deposits at El Refugio upon landing his troop reinforcements near modern-day Redondo Beach: "...the mines yielded 30 thousand dollars worth[of] lead" - thus starting what would become known as Leadville Mines Ltd., later Leadville Mining Co., etc.) Many local residents helped Vallejo find leads at El Refugio before being discharged or given indigent treatment by Ulysses S Grant during American Civil War efforts against Mexico .
